Primary purpose of the Mass

I realised that it’s been a while since I last wrote anything in this blog, except for my daily reflections which aren’t so daily these days!

Just a couple of quotes here, regarding the liturgy from a book that I’m reading, the first one is aimed particularly at those who say that the purpose of the Mass is adoration of Christ in the Eucharist:

Especially at Mass we must remember that our primary purpose is not to adore Christ but to join him in his adoration of the Father. The Jansenists made people believe that the purpose of the Eucharist was to provide them with the means to worship Christ in his real presence rather than to join him in his sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father and to receive him in holy communion. From that error we must be sure to extricate ourselves.

- Foundations of Vatican II Liturgy, by Charles Miller, C.M., published by Society of St. Paul

Do you know who was the first pope who declare that “full, active participation in the sacred liturgy is the indispensable source of the true Christian spirit”? This quote was first made by Pope Pius X.
